First up: A Little Bit more about me

How did I get into Hiking?

Where did it all begin?

Way back when I was 18 (I am now 32) I completed the National Three Peaks Challenge, which is climbing the 3 highest peaks in the UK in 24hours, Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike, talk about going hard or going home! So my first ever Mountain was Ben Nevis and we completed the challenge in around 22 hours. After then I realised how much I liked hiking, so at weekends for a year or two I started to hike in The Peak District and even visited the Lake District for the first time. When I was 19 I did Wainwrights Coast to Coast, however we decided to do it over 7 days (I do not recommend this!) and I ended up with some bad ankle injuries meaning I had to pull out at Richmond, also we had horrendous weather! never do a challenge in August in the UK you are guaranteed a wash out. But not to worry, I do plan on completing this eventually.

During my early twenties I fell out of love with hiking and the great outdoors and did what most young people do, which is to head out on Friday and Saturday nights and spend more time in cities than I did in the countryside.

But luckily in my mid/late twenties I found that I needed something more in my life and I realised I needed to fill it with Adventures.

During this period I was also struggling mentally after a bad break up (we've all been there!) and it dawned on me life is not how they painted it out to be when you are at school, which is get a job for life, buy a house (I did do this but that went very wrong, another story for another time), marry in your twenties and have kids and live happily ever after! If only school taught your real life lessons hey! I knew I didn't actually want some of these things but there was that sense failure because well most of them by my late twenties I hadn't achieved at all.

So as a way of an escape and to reconnect with myself I started hiking again and getting outdoors (this was around 2017/2018) Instagram and the hiking community wasn't really a thing yet nor was I active on Instagram at that time. So I searched for hiking groups, in my localish area on google and found one in the Peak District, I joined quite a few of their walks but I was still struggling to find people my own age who also liked hiking. So, with a couple I met on this walking group who were also a little younger, we set up a 20 -30s (I'd be too old for this now, which is quite funny) walking group on the meet up app, and that really took off! I stepped away from it after a year or two, but during that period I had finally made friends that also loved hiking and we had some amazing days out in The Peak District and trips to Scotland and Wales.

I also went on plenty of solo hikes, or days out to local National Trust Properties and found myself again, found happiness and a realisation that I did not need to conform to social norms.

Why Adventure Awaits?

In 2019 I had nearly found my stride, I had made new friends, been on hiking holidays with friends and solo, including a solo holiday to Slovenia with Exodus travels on a multi activity trip , which still to this day is one of my all time favourite holidays. But I still felt there was a lot more out there, and it is when I turned my Instagram account to more of an outdoors/hiking based account.

In October of that year I was living with my friend for a short while and feeling a little low again, I did some retail therapy, and I LOVE Jewellery so I bought a necklace that could be engraved, I thought for a while about what to put on the necklace and Adventure Awaits was what came to mind. A few weeks later I was invited along to a group hike through Instagram in The Peak District, at Curbar Edge and little did I know what doors it would open, people I would meet, the decisions I would make to get to where I am today.

A move to The Lake District and
The start of my Jewellery Business

2020 and 2021 weren't just about that big thing that happened to the whole world, but having the world stop, sure did make me realise what I really wanted with my life.

During this time I met my partner Leon, made some amazing friends, started to learn to make jewellery and we made the decision to move to The Lake District.

I was born and bred in Nottinghamshire, but city life wasn't for me anymore, and I spent as much of my time not in Nottingham as possible, so when Leon suggested The Lake District, I knew we needed to make it happen and we did just that.

Late Spring/early Summer of 2021 I had started my Jewellery Business, turned 30 and moved to The Lake District.

These were some of the best decisions I have ever made and I still pinch myself  that I can call The Lake District and the beautiful county of Cumbria my home.

Fast forward to 2023, I decided to leave my 10 year career of being a Podiatrist to go self-employed (a big scary leap) I wanted to focus and grow my jewellery business and find other part time jobs that I would enjoy, and one of those jobs is a role I have currently as a Tourism Officer for the Keswick Tourism Association, where I also look after their Social media pages and blogs for the Visit Keswick website. Leaving my career has given me more time to develop this website, and yes I have taken a massive pay cut and money can be tight at times, I know if I continue it will all pay off eventually.

Watch this space!

Unexpectantly becoming an "Influencer"

Through posting and documenting my hikes and travels on my Instagram page @freya_adventureawaits I unexpectantly became an "influencer" and I am ever so grateful the amazing opportunities this has brought me.

I have been able to work with some amazing brands such as Fjallraven, TOG24, Ordnance Survery, Northern Trains and Boden to name a few, alongside small brands and businesses, and affordable to luxury holiday accommodations in the UK.

And this is what this Blog section will mainly be about going forward, less about me, and more about places I have stayed and would love to recommend to you all and hopefully inspire some of you to get out and travel more with your free time.

Hiking guides, Wild Swimming tips and advice, Travel and Lifestyle Inspiration are all to come!

I hope you stay tuned to find out all the exciting things to come x
