Luxury Accommodation in the Heart of The Lake District: Daffodil Hotel & Spa

We stayed over a weekend in March 2024, and arrived on a Friday after a big day out in the Mountains hiking Great Gable from Seathwaite. We arrived at the Daffodil Hotel looking rather bedraggled after experiencing an extremely Windy Gap (the dip in the footpath between Green Gable and Great Gable that becomes just a tad bit of a wind tunnel, to say the least, I lost my favourite hat to those winds, I hope a Herdwick is looking after it)

Once we arrived at the hotel we were greeted warmly by the reception staff who were ever so friendly and headed straight up to our rooms, which were just WOW!

We were staying in the Lake View rooms, the room was really spacious, the bed was a super comfy king sized bed and the bathroom was massive, the shower was hot and powerful, just what we needed to refresh after a windy cold day out hiking.

The rooms are £240 a night over the weekend and £200 a night midweek, breakfast is included and full use of the spa, these prices are only available if you book direct - here

A little bit more on the expensive side but it is so so worth it for a treat.

The views over Grasmere lake and the fells beyond was a tranquil site to wake up to in the morning. And with full amenities in the room it was nice to just relax before getting ready to head down to dinner or out on another adventure.

We ate dinner in the restaurant both nights and the food was absolutely delicious and the waiting staff were brilliant.

The breakfast is also fantastic, they have a hot and cold buffet, with continental and full English breakfast offerings alongside a breakfast menu you can order from, which includes pancakes and smoked salmon scrambled eggs on toast, this yummy breakfast fuelled us up for our days of exploring Grasmere and hiking the fells surrounding the hotel.

The dining room and lounge have lovely lakeside views, and during the spring and summer months the Lakeside terrace is open for you to enjoy dinner, lunch, afternoon tea or drinks outside, in a picturesque setting.

In the lobby to the hotel there is a chic new bar, grab a coffee, cocktails or champagne here.

During your stay you have full access to the Spa. Why not indulge in some R&R during your stay.

  • Open 8am - 8pm Daily and treatments between 10:30am - 6:30pm.

  • Thermal Pool - Unlike a normal pool this is lovely and warm, with different water jets to help ease those aching muscles from hiking the fells in The Lake District, and we used the pool for this exact reason.

  • There is also a sauna and steam room to help you relax and rejuvenate further

  • Complimentary use of the sample products from the spa shop, all Temple Spa products which added to the feeling of being pampered. Using the products to remove make up before going into the spa and then afterwards to re-hydrate our skin.

  • Why not treat yourself even further and book yourself in for a treatment? from their extensive list of massages, facials and body treatments they have on offer.

The Hotel is accessible by car, bus and train.

What I also loved so much about staying at the Daffodil Hotel & Spa, was how many places you could explore straight from the door. Being able to leave your car parked the whole weekend and explore on foot, is not only good for the soul (because a lot of driving can get very tiring) but also it is good for the environment with sustainable travel.

Takes away that stress of worrying about being able to park in some of the small and expensive car parks in The Lake District National Park.

The hotel is also opposite a bus stop, so if you travel to The Lake District by train to the Windermere station, hop on the 555 or the 599 and it will take you straight opposite the hotel.

Single bus fares are capped at £2 until the end of 2024.

  • 555 bus travels from Lancaster - Keswick

  • 599 Bowness-on-Windermere - Grasmere

So if you wanted to go further a field and did not have a car or wanted to leave the car at the hotel, these two buses will take you to some great places all over the national park to explore.

From the hotel front door it is s short distance to the cute little town of Grasmere, with great places for lunch from cafes to pubs and plenty of shops, to have a browse in and of course the ever so famous Grasmere Gingerbread Shop.

If you are looking for hikes, there are several Wainwright fells on the doorstep: Loughrigg fell, Silver How, Stone Arthur, Helm crag, Steel Fell, Calf Crag and Gibson Knott.

You can walk around Grasmere lake to Rydal to visit the Rydal Caves and even head into Ambleside.

If you are wild swimmer you are also spoilt for choice.

You can enter Grasmere water from the banks of the hotel but please do check the water quality before entering, United Utilities not only dumps raw sewage into Windermere but also Grasmere, they now have a live feed on their website and blue dots will indicate if sewage is being discharged, I would recommend avoiding going for a dip in Grasmere after a period of heavy rainfall or if blue/green algae is noticeable on the water, please also prevent your dog from drinking the water.

Please check out the Save Windermere campaign to find out more.

This being said I have swum in Grasmere during the winter months and I have found the water to be clean and a lot healthier than Windermere, and I know a lot of people that still swim in Windermere itself (I do not)

But if this has put you off swimming in Grasmere then why not have a short walk to Rydal water, Rydal falls, Buckstones Jum/p, Easedale tarn or Sourmilk Ghyll which is a beautiful waterfall plunge pool on the way up to Easedale tarn for a cold water tip without the worry.

I will go into lots more detail on things to see and do, hikes and wild swim locations in Grasmere in another blog to come soon.... I will link it here once it is live.

The Daffodil Hotel & Spa is a fantastic place to stay for a treat, not only do you get to enjoy the great outdoors surrounding the hotel and beyond, to then return after a long day of adventure to be pampered and feel suitably relaxed, is just one of the best feelings and how you should feel after any break away.
