Places to stay in Glenfinnan Scotland: Back Track Bothies.

Have you ever wanted to stay in a Bothy but you prefer having all your creature comforts?

Then I have the place for you!

Places to stay in Glenfinnan Scotland

Back Track Bothies is home to three eco friendly wooden cabins, built by hand, nestled in a woodland in the heart of Glenfinnan, Scotland.

The bothies are all round weatherproof with an electric panel heater and woodfired stoves for extra cosiness! All wood and kindling is provided for the woodfired stove and outside BBQ.

Each bothy has a sleeping area (sleeping 1-4, one bothie only sleeps a max of 3), sitting area, a kitchenette and a bathroom with a hot shower and a composting toilet.

Each electric appliance in the Kitchenette has been chosen for its low energy rating, as well as making sure you have everything you need - kettle, mini fridge, microwave, electric hob, toaster, sink and utensils.

All the electrics and the hot shower are powered by renewable energy sources, even the bedding is made from recycled and sustainable sourced materials and the shower gels, washing up liquid and soaps are all eco friendly.

Being kind to the environment and being as eco friendly as possible is at the very heart of Back Track Bothies, the thought and care that has gone into selecting and sourcing every item from small to big is truly amazing, from their reed bed waste water treatment system, green roofs, the 'composting' loos and recycling area, renewable electricity, and natural sheep wool insulation, it truly is a special place.

Please note: The Shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and soaps are provided (when I was there it was Faith in Nature products) so please refrain from using your own products, unless they are eco friendly, to protect the reed beds.

Each bothy has an outside seating area with a sitooterie - fire pit/BBQ and a shared outside hot bath/hot tub that fits two people, just write your name and time on the chalk board to book your slot in the tub and enjoy.

If you would like any extra treats like local food and drinks all you need to do is ask before you arrive, and this can all be arranged.

What is also fantastic about this location is you can access it by car, train and bus!

For the train you will get off at the Glenfinnan Train station (yes the famous Harry Potter Viaduct!) cross the road and head down the track, called the Back Track and walk 150m down the road.

It is the same for the bus, you want to ask for the bus stop closest to the train station, no need to cross the road as you will be on the right side, and just head down the track to the bothies.

There is car parking area in front of the site and you can use the little trolley on wheels to take your belongings to your bothy.

Glenfinnan is just a stunning location and has so much more to offer than the Harry Potter train! So do make sure you explore the surroundings.

I don't know about you but personally I love nothing more than adventures from the doorstep (makes me feel like Bilbo Baggins going on an adventure) and staying in one of the bothies here, you sure do have so many amazing things to see and do in walking distance.

  • The Glenfinnan Monument

  • Glenfinnan Viaduct and Station Museum

  • Loch Shiel

  • The Munros and Corbetts of Glenfinnan

  • St Mary's and St Finnan Church

The Glenfinnan Monument sitting at the head of Loch Shiel, is a place of pilgrimage, and is the site of the Jacobite Rising on the 19th August 1745.

It is important to note that the Jacobite Train (the Harry Potter train) has been suspended until the 15th April 2024, but this could be prolonged if West Coast Railways and The Office of Road and Rail do not come to an agreement on the electronic safety doors that need to be fitted to the Jacobite Train.

Glenfinnan has so much more to offer than just a Harry Potter Train!

Glenfinnan is on the "Road to the Isles" and what a stunning road it is!

Mallaig is about a 35-40 minute drive away from Glenfinnan, but you can also get the train or bus.

From Mallaig you can take a ferry to the Inner and Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Skye.

But what is a must is you must visit the STUNNING, white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters of the seas between Arisaig and Mallaig.

Camusdarach Beach is one of my all time favourite beaches in the whole entire world, and if you ever get the chance to visit this stunning place on a sunny day, whatever time of year, I think you will feel the same.

Fort William is only a 25 - 30 minute drive away, again you can get the train and bus here as well. Fort William is of course the location of Ben Nevis, the UK's Highest Mountain and the Outdoor Capital of the UK!

I could go on and on about all the amazing things to see and do in this area.... and I will... just in another blog! Once I have written it I will link it here!

I cannot miss out the Places to Eat in Glenfinnan while you are staying at Back Track Bothies

There is a small café at the Glenfinnan Viaduct to grab a light lunch, breakfast, snack and hot drink to take away with you on your adventures.

The Dining Car at Glenfinnan Station in a real 1950's train carriage is open 8:30am - 4:30pm and then evenings on a Wednesday, they do hearty breakfasts, delicious lunch, yummy handmade cakes, great coffees and teas and local ales. Please note it is only open Mid March - November.

There are two hotels in walking distance from Back Track Bothies, for dinner or lunch, these are the Glenfinnan House Hotel and The Prince's House Hotel.

Do check their websites to see if they are open when you visit, when we stayed at Back Track Bothies at the start of March 2023, neither were open for dinner, and the Glenfinnan House Hotel is currently closed until the end of May 2024 for refurbishment.

It is best to do a food shop in Fort William as you pass through to stock up on food and drink while you are staying at Back Track Bothies, there is also a co-op 16 minute drive away if you need something closer.

I hope this blog has inspired you to take a trip to Glenfinnan and stay a little while and book a night or two at Back Track Bothies, so you can experience everything this beautiful place has to offer.
